Unions commemorate the General Strike
100 years since "Black Friday" (Brisbane's General Strike)
of 1912!
On Thursday the 2nd February 2012, union members rallied in King George Square to commemorate the centenary of the Brisbane General Strike.
At its heart, the Brisbane General Strike of 1912 was about the right to belong to a union.
Guest speakers included Uncle Bob Anderson who performed the "Welcome to Country", QCU President John Battams who addressed the rally and spoke of the struggles for workers in 1912 and how they were still similar with the struggles we face today. Senator Clair Moore talked about Emma Millar (pioneer trade unionist) and the advancement of women in the union movement.

Northern Territory Workers
As of this
month (January 2012) all CFMEU members with the Northern Territory branch will combine with the Queensland Branch to be known as the CFMEU Queensland/NT Branch.
With the two branches merging the effect for the Northern Territory members will be to see changes with more benefits and a stronger representation on the ground and in the courts and new enterprise agreements. One of the strengths of the Queensland branch has been putting resources and organisers in remote and regional areas which has seen this union grow strongly in regional Queensland in recent years.
We have finalised a new agreement for the $30 billion LNG gas project for Darwin (INPEX) and we are in advanced negotiations for the new $500 million prison to be built on the outskirts of Darwin ( Baulderstone/Sitlzer) and the $180 million accommodation barracks for the LNG Darwin gas project (Laing O'Rourke).
2012 will see a massive change in respect to safety on NT construction sites due to the new national Health and Safety Laws.
We look forward to representing our new NT members and existing QLD members of this new combined strong branch!
