STATE SECRETARY - Michael Ravbar

Michael Ravbar commenced work as an Organiser and Industrial Officer with the Operative Painters and Decorator's Union (OPDU) in late 1989. Michael became an Industrial Officer with the CFMEU in 1992 following the amalgamation of the OPDU and the BWIU. As an Industrial Officer, Michael was active in advancing wages and conditions as the principal negotiator for civil engineering and major projects, overseeing and managing industrial disputes, was the CFMEU advocate in the State and Federal Industrial Relations Commissions and managed workers compensation claims. Michael was promoted to a leadership role in the CFMEU in late 1998 to co-ordinate regional organisers, and subsequesntly spent a lot of time away from Brisbane looking after the industrial and health and safety needs of regional workers. The following year, Michael took over responsibility of co-ordinating all organisers. In 2004, he became an Assistant State Secretary of the CFMEU. In this role, he again became more involved in the industrial and political side of the union. In January 2007, Michael was honoured to become the State Secretary of the CFMEUQ, the largest union representing construction workers. He has overall responsibility for the development and implementation of union policy and administration of the union. Michael is interested in politics, history and sport and enjoys reading and spending time with his family.

ASSISTANT STATE SECRETARY - Peter Close

Peter Close was born in Brisbane in 1961. He commenced working as an Apprentice Cabinet Maker in 1978 for Gralton Brothers. Peter became involved in the union in 1982, and was a BWIU delegate at many sites, including the Brisbane Domestic Airport Terminal for a period of about 8 years. He was also actively involved in Sub-Branch and a number of rank-and-file activities. In 1994, Peter was elected as a State Organiser with the CFMEU, with his primary responsibilities being the Brisbane CBD and offsite. During Peter's time as an organiser he managed to recover millions of dollars of unpaid wages and entitlements for members, and also got many enterprise bargaining agreements signed. Peter was elected as Assistant State Secretary of the CFMEUQ in 2002. His main task has been to co-ordinate organisers, co-ordinate Enterprise Bargaining Campaigns and to oversee the development of delegates and activists. Peter's years of experience with the construction industry and as an activist, delegate and organiser give him a thorough knowledge of the conditions and issues affecting CFMEU members. Peter is interested in most sports and likes to go fishing and camping. He also likes to spend time with his family and to continue the seemingly never-ending process of renovating his old Queenslander.
